Gordinho did exceptionally well – Fredericks

Lorenzo Gordinho made on Tuesday his Bafana Bafana debut, playing in a friendly against Zambia. “Lorenzo did exceptionally well,” former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Stanton ‘Stiga’ Fredericks reflects on the defender’s performance.

South Africa lost 2-1 to Zambia, after having been 1-0 up at half-time.

“Gordinho didn’t look nervous at all on his debut,” Fredericks adds. “He never put a foot wrong.”

About the second goal, when there was a slight misunderstanding between Rivaldo Coetzee, Gordinho and the goalkeeper, Fredericks says: “One can’t put the blame on him for that.

“If I would give him a mark, I give him seven out of ten, which is very good. Lorenzo can only grow from here. For me, he passed his first Bafana test with flying colours.”

About the overall performance of South Africa, Fredericks comments: “I was very impressed with the first half. The second half was less good. However, that often happens in friendlies when there are many changes, especially in the middle of the park. That’s when a team loses some momentum and that’s how Zambia got back into the game.

“But the match against Nigeria and Tuesday’s first half against Zambia were impressive. I am excited with how Bafana Bafana performed. We are on the right track and I am positive about the future.”
