“It is bittersweet to win an individual award when the team didn't win any silverware,” Ramahlwe ‘Rama’ Mphahlele looked back on the numerous awards he received at the 2016/2017 Kaizer Chiefs Players Awards function on Thursday evening. “However, you can’t take away individual efforts. We worked tirelessly as a team, but individual performances are part and parcel of the game.”

The annual awards ceremony was held on Thursday, 1 June, at the Theatre on the Track, in Kyalami, Johannesburg.

“I’m grateful to receive these accolades,” added Rama. “These rewards will motivate the rest of the team to work harder going into next season.”

Mphahlele joined Amakhosi as a marquee signing at the start of the season from Mamelodi Sundowns. The 27-year-old was consistent throughout the season, bagging three Man of the Match awards, scoring two goals, providing four assists and also earning national team call-ups along the way. A great season indeed!

“When I came to Chiefs, I knew I had only one choice and that’s to win,” said Rama. “I knew I was joining a huge club, with great history and pedigree. With these rewards I am challenged to work even harder to improve my performances and contribute to the team’s goal of winning trophies next season.”

Mphahlele walked away with Player of the Month awards for November and May, carrying R10 000 each in prize money.

Recognized by his teammates for his effort, the right-back received the most votes to be selected as the Players’ Player of the Season, driving home in a brand-new Toyota RAV4 vehicle which he will drive for the next 12 months.

Rama also added the 2016/17 KC Online Player and Fair Play awards to his trophy cabinet, respectively adding R25 000 and R20 000 to his bank balance.

“Without my teammates this wouldn't be possible,” concluded Rama. “I wish to thank the entire Amakhosi Family for the support during my first season with the club. I wish the team a good rest during the off-season and look forward to a great season ahead of us."
