Amakhosi will be out to secure progression to the group stages of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup when they host Democratic Republic of Congo outfit, AS Simba on Sunday, 26 October in their second round, second-leg encounter at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto.
The tie hangs in the balance after the first-leg ended 0-0 in Lubumbashi last Saturday. Amakhosi, who will be playing their first continental game at the Dobsonville stadium in 11 years will be confident of moving on in the competition.
Chiefs’ only other game in African Club competition at the venue, one of five they have used over the years, was a 1-2 reverse suffered against the Ivorian club, ASEC Mimosas, in a Confederation Cup play-off round game in 2014. With that in mind though, Chiefs will look to home comforts to get them through as they are undefeated in their last eight homes in continental competition, and have not conceded a goal in any of those games.
Amakhosi won 1-0 at home in the in the second-leg of their first round encounter against Angolan club, Kabuscorp, with Chiefs winning the tie on penalties after the aggregate scores were tied at 1-1.
For Chiefs, the equation against Simba, is simple: win and move on to the group stages. Chiefs’ only previous home game against a team from the DRC was a 2-0 win in a 2014 CAF Champions League Second Round second-leg encounter, although they ultimately lost the tie 3-2 on aggregate.
Overall, this is Chiefs’ sixth game against a team from Central Africa, in addition to their games against AS Vita they also faced Cameroonian side, PWD Bamenda, in a CAF Champions League first round game in 2020/21. Chiefs’ record overall against Central African teams has seen them win two games, draws, with one loss.
Amakhosi will be in search of two goals to take them to a century in African club competition.
The draw for the group stages of the tournament will be held in Johannesburg at the SuperSport studios on 3 November at 13:00 SA Time.
