In recognition of his substantial contribution to South Africa’s business landscape over many decades, Kaizer Chiefs Executive Chairman, Dr. Kaizer Motaung, was bestowed with a second honorary doctorate on Tuesday, this time by Wits University’s Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management.

The Chairman, who was conferred with an Honorary doctorate in Social Science by the University of Cape Town in 2022, now adds the title, Doctor of Commerce (Honoris Causa), to his long list of well-deserved accolades.

Dr. Motaung accepted the certificate in the presence of everyone assembled at the graduation ceremony with typical graciousness, noting at the very beginning of his speech, “I am deeply humbled to stand before you today, accepting this honorary doctorate from this esteemed University. This recognition is not just a testament to my own journey, but also a tribute to the beautiful game of football that has given me so much.”

Reflecting on the incredible odyssey that saw him create Kaizer Chiefs from nothing, overcoming numerous obstacles through his sheer determination to realise his vision, to steer them to the pinnacle of the game, and beyond, the Chairman said, “One of the most significant challenges I faced was starting Kaizer Chiefs FC and building it into the powerhouse it is today.

“When we founded Kaizer Chiefs in 1970, many thought it was a crazy idea. We had limited resources, no established fan base, and a lot of scepticism about our chances of success. But I believed in the potential of the club, and I was determined to make it happen.

“There were many obstacles along the way,” he continued, “We faced financial struggles, logistical challenges, and intense competition from established teams. But I never gave up. I worked tirelessly to build a strong club, attracted talented players, and developed a winning culture and subsequently became known as the winners.”

The Chairman went on to express his profound appreciation for those who have played positive roles at critical times in his life, making a point of thanking his parents for “their unwavering support and guidance; their influence has shaped me into the person I am today” ,and his family, particularly his wife, Julegka, “who has been my rock throughout my journey.”

Dr. Motaung also recognised the contributions of the Club’s supporters and sponsors respectively to making Chiefs what they are today, “one of the most successful and beloved football clubs in South Africa. We've won multiple titles and produced some of the country's most talented players, who have gone on to represent South Africa on the international stage.”

As the multitude of young business graduates sat spellbound, hanging on his every word, the Chairman segued into sharing some of the wisdom he has acquired over many years in the field many of them will soon be entering.

“The journey to building Kaizer Chiefs was not easy, but it was worth it,” he began. “It taught me the importance of perseverance, hard work, and visionary leadership. It showed me that with determination and a clear plan, anything is possible. As a business leader, I've applied the same principles to my work of football. I've received numerous awards and accolades for my entrepreneurial achievements, including the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver, which was awarded to me by the South African government for my contributions to sports and business.”

In truly inspiring fashion, the Chairman concluded by invoking the uplifting words of former USA First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. “To the graduates, I say this: The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. Whether you are pursuing a career in sports, academia, or any other field, remember that success is within your reach. Stay focused, stay driven, and always believe in yourselves.”

The Chairman closed his address with the quintessential civility that is one of the hallmarks of his unimpeachable character.

“It is an honour to be recognized by this great institution, and I hope that my contributions to society have made a positive impact. I am proud to be part of this community, and I hope that my legacy will continue to inspire future generations.”

The Kaizer Chiefs Family offer heartiest congratulations to the Chairman on this memorable occasion.
