Mendu demands to be released

Premier Soccer League defending champs Kaizer Chiefs are surprised that their ‘beleaguered’ midfielder Jabulani Mendu is claiming salaries for a period he did not work (June, July and August 2004).

The club, in its statement on Wednesday, 01 September 2004 said Mendu is the one who told Team Manager, Bobby Motaung in front of witnesses that he “would not be going to the club’s off-season, Vodacom Challenge camp in Mafikeng because he had made up his mind about his future with the us and indicated his intentions to leave the club, to club chairman, Kaizer Motaung in a hastily arranged meeting, and subsequently he, at his own will stayed away from work (training)”.

In a response letter faxed to the player’s manager Glyn Bynkin after he had made the salary and signing-on fee demands Motaung. “Secondly, whilst you were away you sent a letter demanding that the club should release you, to which, we granted you our consent, the club has since signed a player to replace you,” said Motaung in the letter.

The report further revealed that Motaung had failed to persuade Mendu to come to work and now he is still waiting for indications from the player or any other club interested in his services, after Ajax Cape Town’s approach of a ‘swop-deal’ involving one of their players did not appeal to the Naturena based side, and Moroka Swallows are said not to have returned to Chiefs with a firm offer after showing interest in Mendu.

Motaung concluded by saying: “Let me categorically state that at no stage did myself or anybody from the office instructed you not to come to work or suspend you during the period stated in your letter or shall I say we will be pleased if you provide us with proof thereof”

It has since transpired that with the registration deadline having passed by at 12 midnight on Tuesday, 31 August 2004 for all PSL clubs who made transfers or bought players, no club has secured a clearance for the services of Mendu from Kaizer Chiefs.
