Two early goals by French club Lyon were enough to seal Kaizer Chiefs' fate in their opening Group A match in the 2003 Peace Cup in Daejeon, South Korea on Tuesday.

The Glamour Boys struggled to find their feet in the opening minutes and made a number of defensive blunders. Lyon cashed in ruthlessly.

Brian Bergougnoux fired the French club into the lead in the third minute. Goalkeeper Brian Baloyi spilled a long-range shot from Eric Carriere and Bergougnoux was quick to pounce on the rebound.

Bergougnoux completed his brace after 15 minutes. Brazilian Juninho played a fine ball into space towards the far side with the Chiefs defence badly exposed, leaving Bergougnoux clear to fire a stunning shot into the top corner.

While Stanton Fredericks and Jabu Pule showed flashes of brilliance in midfield, overall the French dominated this aspect of the game with Juninho and Carriere pulling the strings.

As the match wore on, Chiefs got back into the game and were particularly impressive in the second half. However, they could not crack the Lyon defence.

Chiefs will prepare for the next match knowing that nothing short of victory against home side Seongnam on Thursday will be enough to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the final next Tuesday.

Seongnam scored a 2-1 win against Turkish side Besiktas in Seoul in another Group A match.

Group B swings into action on Wednesday with Germany's 1860 Munich up against Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven at Busan and US team LA Galaxy taking on Club Nacional of Uruguay at Ulsan.
