Kaizer Chiefs will be without goalkeeper Brandon Petersen for Wednesday evening’s DStv Premiership clash against SuperSport United. The shot-stopper misses the game as a result of a family bereavement. Petersen’s absence sees veteran Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune stepping in to make what will be his 364th appearance for the club to extend his own record for the most number of games played for the club since the start of the PSL era in 1996-97.
Khune’s appearance against Matsatsantsa has further significance as it will see him feature for a 17th consecutive season for the club, since making his debut in 2007-08 Khune will have played in at least one official game for Amakhosi in every campaign over this period, becoming the first Chiefs player in the PSL Era to achieve this milestone.
The 2023-24 season is Khune’s 20th successive season as a Chiefs first team member. He was promoted to the Chiefs first team by the late Ted Dumitru during the 2004-05 campaign, and made his first team debut as a 20-year-old on the 25th August 2007 in a 1-1 league draw against Jomo Cosmos, in Durban. Khune has started 361 games for Chiefs and made two substitute appearances for the club.
