Soweto Derby: The Battle Is On

Kaizer Chiefs versus Orlando Pirates remains the standout fixture on the South African sports calendar. The clash set for 9 February is the first Soweto Derby in 2019. It comes at a time when the top of the Absa Premiership table is still pretty much congested.

A win for either side at this point provides a huge boost to league title ambitions. Teams are still jostling for places, so #TheBattleIsOn. The battle is on for a myriad of things: three points, league honours, bragging rights, pride, respect… the list goes on.

Keen followers of South African football will know, the battle does not start at 15:30 on 9 February 2019, it starts long before that – #TheBattleIsOn Derby fever already grips the nation today.

The following is a remedy for Soweto Derby fever that will be experienced leading up to the clash at The Calabash:

  • Legends


Kaizer Chiefs legends descend upon the Kaizer Chiefs Village and various media touchpoints to give prominence to the height of the occasion. They will be giving accounts of their hard-fought battles in the Derby.

 

Kaizer Chiefs is proud of its family of millions that drive all the club’s successes. Players and fans will be interacting across various roadshows and activations all in the name of uniting for this epic battle.

 

  • Activations


Kaizer Chiefs legends will visit on Friday, 8 February, a selected number of KC Stores to interact with supporters. Please watch this space as further updates will be reported on www.kaizerchiefs.com

 

  • Retail specials


One cannot go to battle without the correct uniform. KC Stores will run a special that will award supporters the chance of winning tickets to the Soweto Derby. Make sure that you look the part with our special ‘Get the Look’ promotion.

For only R499, supporters can purchase the combo of the Hail the Chief t-shirt, Hail the Chief bucket hat and either one of leggings/shorts. This limited offer is only available the KC Stores at The Village and Tramshed – buyers will get two free stadium tickets for the Derby.

Furthermore, by spending R499 or more in-store, supporters will activate two free tickets to the Derby at the following KC Stores; The Village, Tramshed, Golden Walk and Rustenburg.

Please be advised that it is a limited offer so a first come, first serve protocol will be observed.

What is the Soweto Derby without supporters? On the Thursday evening before the Derby, supporters start leaving their home on their long journey to Naturena.  All through the night social media platforms are buzzing with progress reports – Worscester, Touws River, Beauford West, Colesburg, Craddock, Queenstown, Aliwal North, Estcourt, Montrose, Harrismith, Bloemfontein, Edenburg, Kroonstad… Thereafter, it’s the final stretch, arriving home (Chiefs Village) on Friday afternoon.

We want to wish all supporters a safe trip – please drive safely, stick to the speed limits, obey the rules of the road and don’t drink and drive!

  • Chiefs Village


There is always something happening at the Village as a build-up to the game. Old friends unite, and new friendships are formed.  Every person arriving at Chiefs Village is given a warm Amakhosi welcome.  It’s at times like this that the ‘Amakhosi Family of Millions’ truly comes to life. Loud singing goes hand in hand with hugs and handshakes, big happy smiles, loud laughter and friendly banter.

On Saturday morning, the Village welcomes supporters from the Free State, North West, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape and KZN start arriving in numbers as well as local supporters from across Gauteng. The Village closes the gate on Saturday at 11:30 as we don’t want our supporters to get to FNB Stadium late.

 

  • Tickets


Tickets for the clash are fast running out and supporters are advised to purchase theirs urgently to avoid disappointment.

The costs of tickets are R100 for Level 1, R150 for Level 2, R70 for Level 5 and R30 for children under the age of 12. Tickets can be obtained at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers outlets nationwide. Parking is free in designated free.
