Gustavo Páez’s goal scored in injury time helped Kaizer Chiefs beat Absa Premiership champions Bidvest Wits 1-0 and power into the fourth spot on the league table.

“I didn’t like it that another team comes to our house (FNB Stadium) to be celebrated as the champions,” the Venezuelan striker reacted on the game against the Clever Boys. “That was very difficult for me. However, we are a big team and that’s why it’s important that we beat Wits.”

Páez has done well since becoming a Glamour Boy in January. The game against Wits was his fifth start in a league match, while he came on as a substitute in ten games. The 27-year-old also started in a cup match (coming on in two games).

“I was happy with the confidence the coach showed in me to have me start against Wits,” Páez said.

On his goal in injury time, the striker reflected: “I held up my run into the box, waiting like a baby. Then, when the pass came, I pounced on the ball and slotted it past the Wits goalkeeper.”

When asked why the Venezuelan compares his patience in the box to ‘a baby’, a big smile appears on his face: “My wife is two month pregnant. We will have a South African child.”

The Wits goal was already his fifth (two league, three cup) since joining Chiefs four months ago. His first goal came in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 fixture, in the 3-0 win over Stellenbosch FC in March.

“Next season I want to score at least ten goals,” the Venezuelan promised. “I think that’s a realistic target, considering I scored five times in half a season.”

Talking about next season, Páez feels that Kaizer Chiefs must “become more effective. Not only in finishing, but also from a defensive point of view. We need to learn to be more focused.

“I am disappointed that we couldn’t win a trophy this season but we definitely plan to win trophies next season. We had eleven draws. That’s too much. We should turn these draws into more wins. We have done well at home this season, not losing a single game, but we need to be more effective when playing away.”

Kaizer Chiefs finished the 2016/2017 Absa Premiership season in fourth spot, having collected 50 points from 30 matches, that’s four points more than the previous season when a fifth spot was the end result.
