This coming weekend is not only a long weekend to celebrate Freedom Day, but also a massive sporting occasion in South Africa, as Soweto’s football giants Kaizer Chiefs, and their nemesis, Orlando Pirates, lock horns in the second Soweto Derby of the season. The highly anticipated clash takes place on Sunday at FNB stadium.

This fixture marks the 185th official meeting between the two Soweto rivals since their first encounter back in 1970. While Amakhosi historically hold the edge in overall victories, the Buccaneers claimed the bragging rights in their last showdown at the end of February, to add extra spice to this rematch.

Both sets of players, and the respective technical teams, are fully aware of the magnitude of the occasion. For Chiefs, it’s about reclaiming pride and momentum, while Pirates aim to consolidate their position on the log. The Buccaneers currently sit second in the Betway Premiership table, with Amakhosi close behind in third place.

The atmosphere promises to be electric. Tickets for the clash are already sold out, highlighting the passion and demand for this big Derby. Supporters without tickets are encouraged to tune in from home or gather at viewing venues with friends to soak up the action. The match will be broadcast live on SABC 1 and SuperSport’s PSL channel (DStv channel 202).

For those lucky enough to have secured tickets, gates at FNB Stadium will open at 10:00, and supporters are urged to arrive early to avoid congestion and enjoy the build-up. Kick-off for the clash of pride, history and bragging rights is scheduled for 15:00 on Sunday, when the Phefeni Glamour Boys and the Sea Robbers reignite one of Africa’s fiercest football rivalries.
