After the match had to be delayed for almost 30 minutes to accommodate all the supporters that traveled to the game, both teams served up a pleasing display of attacking football.
The scoreline was perhaps a fair reflection of the play, but Chiefs fans will feel aggrieved having seen Jabu Pule miss a penalty just before halftime that could have given his side all three points.
Sundowns midfielder Alex Bapela had the first real chance of the game after 15 minutes, but his shot was well saved by Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Brian Baloyi.
Chiefs then began to turn the screw, though, and it seemed likely they would be the ones to open the scoring.
Pule was denied three times before halftime by home goalkeeper Ronnie Kanalelo, the final of these being the disputed penalty.
Phumlani Mkhize was adjudged to have been brought down by Craig Bianchi in the Sundowns penalty area but the spot-kick looked harsh as there seemed minimal contact and the tackle was made outside the area.
But Sundowns will feel justice was served as Kanalelo guessed right and saved the shot from Pule.
Despite plenty of goalmouth action in the second period, neither side was able to force the opening goal.
Mkhize and Thabo Mooki went close for the visitors, while Bapela and Daniel Mudau narrowly missed out on giving Sundowns the lead.
The result leaves the Brazilians in fourth place in the PSL, three points behind leaders SuperSport United with both sides having played eleven matches.
Chiefs continue to struggle in the league and with the prospect of Jomo Cosmos on the horizon on Saturday, they are in twelfth with just 13 points from 10 matches.
