Every Chiefs game is a cup final – Maluleka

“We take every game as a cup final,” stresses George Maluleka ahead of Kaizer Chiefs’ match against Bloemfontein Celtic in the Sparta Macufe Cup at the Free State Stadium on Sunday afternoon (kick-off is at 15:00).

“There are no friendlies when you are playing for Chiefs.”

Amakhosi’s record has been a bit mixed in the Macufe Cup, because, after having won the first two editions (2004, 2005), the trophy has since only been collected twice more. Even worse, Celtic won the last three editions.

Maluleka came on in last week’s Telkom Knockout Last 16 clash against Platinum Stars, scoring brilliantly in the dying minutes, chipping the ball coolly over the incoming goalkeeper after a stunning run.

The 26-year-old midfielder’s last goal in an official game came about a year ago, when he netted against Platinum Stars in a 3-0 win in the second leg of the MTN8 semifinal (on 24 August 2014).

“It was a good feeling to score that goal on Sunday,” reflects Maluleka on scoring in Chiefs’ Telkom Knockout win, “after having stayed dry for a long time. As a result of that goal, I am feeling more confident now.”

It will be the midfielder’s first Macufe Cup.

“This will be a big game,” the Chiefs midfielder concludes. “We faced Celtic recently twice in the MTN8. We lost the last three times we played for the Macufe Cup and, of course, that bites a bit.”

“That’s why we want to win the trophy this time around. Not only for ourselves, as players, but also for the club and the supporters. We are looking forward to the match.”
