Wits University caused a major upset at Olympia Park on Sunday when they scored a deserved 2-0 win over title-chasing Kaizer Chiefs in an action packed Castle Premiership fixture on Sunday.

Wits led 1-0 at halftime.

Chiefs missed a couple of goal scoring chances in the opening period and generally held a territorial advantage.

But it was the students who kept pressing and were rewarded when they broke the deadlock five minutes from halftime when a well taken header by Stewart Murisa, who outjumped the Amakhosi defence to head home his captain Charles Yohane's inch perfect free kick.

Wits 'keeper Wayne Roberts saw off challenges from Kabamba Musasa in the third and 38th minutes.

Chiefs Stanton Fredericks should have scored in the 23rd minute but with an open goal at his mercy after Roberts was forced to try and clear, the Chiefs midfielder lobbed his shot over the crossbar.

Both teams managed to produce a quick paced first half despite playing in sweltering conditions.

The second half continued where the first left off. Wits went onto the attack and were awarded a penalty in the 48th minute when defender Patrick Mabedi was adjudged to have brought down Murisa inside his penalty area by referee Buyile Gqubule.

But Chiefs goalkeeper and captain Baloyi brilliantly saved Yohane's spot kick to keep his side in the game.

Chiefs pushed hard for the equaliser and a good piece of defending from Tsietsi Mahoa denied Stanton Fredericks a goal in the 52nd minute.

Murisa put the issue beyond doubt in the 68th minute when he latched onto Shakes Ngwenya's through ball and blasted home the second goal to give Wits a 2-0 lead.

Roberts pulled off another good save in the 74th minute to prevent substitute Kelvin Mushangazhike a goal in the 74th minute.
