Amakhosi take 20 players to Cameroon

Kaizer Chiefs have taken a travelling contingent of 20 of their 30 registered players for the CAF Champions League to Limbe, South Western Cameroon, for the first leg of their 2020-21 CAF Champions League Preliminary round tie against PWD Bamenda.

Chiefs will be facing the newly crowned Cameroonian champions on Sunday 29 November 2020 in the first leg at the Omni Sports Stadium in Limbe, kick-off is at 16h00 South African time.

Amakhosi departed from O.R. Tambo Airport heading for Cameroon via Addis Ababa in Ethiopia just before midnight on Thursday.  They landed in Douala Cameroon just after 11h30 am local time this morning.  After a bus journey of two hours they will arrive in Limbe.

Coach Gavin Hunt welcomes back defender Erick Mathoho who has been serving a ban in the domestic league but is now available for selection should the coach wish to field him against the Cameroonians.  Hunt himself has a lot of experience when it comes to African club competition - however he has never played a Cameroonian opponent.

This is Hunt’s fifth campaign into Africa’s premier club competition, having participated three times with SuperSport United, while more recently he was at the helm of BIDVest Wits when they featured in the tournament in 2017 and 2018.

Hunt will be supported on the side lines in Limbe by assistant coach Arthur Zwane, Lee Baxter the goalkeeper coach and a full technical team.  Assistant coach Dillon Sheppard has remained behind to work with the players who have not travelled, as they will be continue with their normal training regime at the Club’s base in Naturena.

While Chiefs do have several players who are yet to compete in African club competition, they do have vast experienced players such as Khama Billiat, Leonardo Castro, Lazalous Kambole, Anthony Agay, Itumeleng Khune and Erick Mathoho.

Kambole holding the record for having scored the fastest hattrick in the competition - he scored a trio of goals for Zesco United in a 3-0 CAF Champions’ League group stage win against Mbabane Highlanders of Swaziland in Manzini, on the 18th August 2018 when he netted three goals in the space of five minutes. He scored his first goal in the 39th minute and then netted his second a minute and completed his hat-trick in the 43rd minute to set the record, for the quickest hattrick in the competition.

The referee and assistants for the game are from Gabon while the match commissioner will be from the Central African Republic,

Chiefs will train at 15h00 local time in Limbe on Friday afternoon.
