The Black Stars of Ghana and the Elephants of Ivory Coast have already booked their tickets to the biggest soccer spectacle in the world. It is now left to countries like Cameroon, Gabon, Tunisia, Nigeria, Algeria and Egypt to see who will be heading to the south of the continent.
Chiefs and Zimbabwean international Zhiamu Jambo sat down with kaizerchiefs.com on Friday morning to analyze the upcoming clashes between African giants.
In Group A, Cameroon will need a win or a point to book their ticket in the 2010 tournament after disappointingly missing out in 2006. Gabon cannot be written off though as they have proved they have what it takes to surprise the Indomitable Lions.
“Cameroon is definitely coming down to South Africa,” predicted the Zimbabwean, who has been capped 17 times by his country.
“They have what it takes to make this happen in Group A where they are currently leading with 10 points after five games. I am sure they are going to beat Gabon to qualify. Cameroon took a good decision when they gave the armband to Eto because he always leads from the front,” said Jambo.
In Group B stakes are as high with Tunisia leading the pack with 11 points after 5 games. Football powerhouse Nigeria, who are on 9 points after five games are second.
“Tunisia should win this group. They need only a draw away to Mozambique and that should be enough for them to book their ticket to South Africa. Nigeria should beat Kenya away but it’s too late for them,” he says.
Up North Algeria and Egypt will be renewing their rivalry when the two powerhouses lock horns in a Group C top-of-the-table clash in Cairo. The rivalry between the two countries is well documented such that FIFA has urged both countries to promote Fair Play.
“This one will be a war,” said Jambo. “Egypt is currently trailing with 10 points while Algeria have 13 points…Egypt should turn the tables playing in front of their vociferous fans. The tricky part is that they need to score couple of goals as goal difference is not on their favour…I see Egypt coming to South Africa,” concluded Jambo.
Further up field in Europe the World Cup Play-Offs will be taking place starting this weekend with superpowers, France led by Thiery Henry, Portugal who will be missing injured Ronaldo, equally capable Russia led by their prolific marksman, Andrei Arshavin, Andriy Shevchenko led Ukraine and Greece will be hoping to force their place to the 2010 finals in South Africa next year.
