“This is a massive confidence booster,” Kaizer Chiefs striker Bernard Parker reflects after the 3-0 win over Bidvest Wits on Wednesday evening. “We looked solid in all departments. Our defence was great, we looked dangerous whenever we attacked, we created numerous chances and, most importantly, we scored. As a result, we cleared our minds. We are now ready for the Orlando Pirates clash on Saturday.”
For Parker himself it was a big confidence booster as well thanks to putting the ball in the net twice: “In the past few weeks the strikers have been under pressure for not scoring more often, especially by the media. So this was great, especially because of the way we carried ourselves.”
Amakhosi coach Stuart Baxter was excited to see Parker’s return to form in front of goal: “Bernard was class. I always stress - if we can get Bernard firing on all cylinders, that’s good news for Chiefs. But that’s also great for the South African national team. I keep telling people that Bernard is probably one of the smartest players in the PSL. And if he’s not on song, it’s probably because he sometimes puts himself under too much pressure when things don’t go his way, as he expects so much of himself.”
The next Absa Premiership match is against the Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon. “Going into the Derby after this result is perfect,” remarks Parker. “They lost their game this week, they lost their coach and, as a result, they have to play catch up. The pressure will be on them. We are looking for a result, as a Club like Chiefs do for every game. I am looking forward to the Derby.”
