Kaizer Chiefs beat Golden Arrows 2-0 in an Absa Premiership fixture at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday evening. Cameldine Abraw opened the score in the seventh minute, while substitute William Twala added the second in the dying seconds of the encounter.
Coach Steve Komphela made a few changes to the side that started against Orlando Pirates in the weekend.
George Lebese returned to the starting line-up after having fully recovered from his groin injury, while Kgotso Moleko started ahead of Siboniso Gaxa, who was rested.
Itumeleng Khune hadn’t fully recovered from his lower calf issue, which was the cause of him leaving the field on a stretcher in the Soweto Derby, and was replaced by Reyaad Pieterse.
Bernard Parker was back in the squad after having recovered from his knee injury.
Amahosi completely dominated the first half, playing some good football.
The opening goal already came in the seventh minute with Camaldine Abraw heading the ball in goal. Siphiwe Tshabalala had stood behind the ball to take the set-piece. However, instead of delivering the ball straight into the box, ‘Shabba’ knocked it to George Maluleka, who curved the ball beautifully towards the Togolese striker, 1-0.
Chiefs got several good opportunities to extend the lead. Lebese went one-on-one with the Chippa goalkeeper, but was a bit unlucky to find that he chipped the ball over the crossbar.
Tshabalala also got a fine chance after an excellent run on the left by Lebese, before crossing the ball straight to the captain. However, Shabba’s shot failed to hit the target.
Katsande (excellent shot at goal, well kept out by the goalkeeper) and Abraw (header, just directed wide) were others who had good great opportunities to extend the lead, but it wasn’t to be in the first half.
The Zimbabwean midfielder, it has to be said, was again in excellent form, winning balls and closing down gaps wherever they occurred.
Tshabalala and Lebese were also doing well, using excellently the space given to them by the home side.
Arrows came out of the dressing room much sharper than the first half, creating a few chances, while they had little to offer during the first 45 minutes.
On the other hand, Arrows’ domination, when it comes to possession of the ball, didn’t result in too many goal scoring opportunities.
The visitors, meanwhile, seemed to find it more difficult. There was no more that fluency of the first half, although there were still a few chances.
The best was a deflected shot by Abraw, which was saved by the Arrows goalkeeper.
Coach Komphela decided the ring the changes from the 70th minute, bringing on Twala for Maluleka (71th minute) and Bernard Parker for Lebese (75th minute).
It created that Chiefs got a bit more into the game in the second half.
Eventually, it was Twala who added the second, after a great through ball into the Arrows box by Parker.
In the end, Amakhosi deserved the win and with it the three points.
Chiefs are now in fourth position on the Absa Premiership log, having collected 29 points after 17 matches played.
Katsande was again selected as the Man of the Match, after the winning the award also for Saturday’s Soweto Derby. The Zimbabwean was again superb in midfield.
