Tasriq Morris came off the bench to score the deciding goal in the Absa Premiership encounter between Ajax Cape Town and Kaizer Chiefs, which saw the home side claim a 1-0 win at the Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Stuart Baxter will feel aggrieved after his side had plenty of the possession and created the majority of the chances, while Eleazar Rodgers was also denied by the post.

Ajax came into the game buoyed by their last home result, a 1-0 win against Free State Stars, and with memories of their 3-1 victory over Chiefs in May still fresh in their minds.

Chiefs offered the first form of attack by winning the ball back in the midfield and, with some quick passing George Lebese was able to take a shot from outside the box.

His fourth minute shot went wide and likewise for Telinho’s strike at the opposite end of the park straight after the goal-kick.

By the 17th minute the away side was winning the physical and possession battle on the park, but there was still little goal mouth action to report on.

Thulani Hlatshwayo, who was back in action and wearing a scrumcap after suffering a concussion against Tuks, did well to rise above his marker and head a corner kick, however, Itumeleng Khune was equal to it.

Just minutes before the half hour mark, Anssi Jaakkola’s punching save went as far as Reneilwe Letsholonyane. He met it on the half-volley, but Dominic Isaacs did well to boot it clear.

Ajax’s closest moment came in the 31st minute when Hlatshwayo made an impressive run and cross from his right flank. His ball met Eleazar Rodgers but he could only side-foot it onto the upright.

Five minutes later Abbubaker Mobara tried to nod in Lebogang Manyama’s free-kick, but the two teams walked into the break as they started, goalless.

Muhsin Ertugral opted for change at the restart, bringing on Keagan Dolly in place of Cole Alexander, as Ajax came out looking more promising.

Eleazar Rodgers should have done better with his 53rd minute shot. Toriq Losper and Hlatshwayo were involved in some great one-two play, but the defender’s cross was directed on target by the troubled striker.

Four minutes later Dolly was guilty of missing the target, despite having plenty of room on the left-flank, while the masses of Chiefs fans started to call for a substitution.

Tefu Mashamaite’s header off Simphiwe Tshabalala’s corner in the 72nd minute was the closest Chiefs had come to scoring in the second 45, seeing the ball skim onto the roof of the net.

Chiefs laid on a late siege of attacks, but it was Ajax who stole the show when Tasriq Morris connected Mobara’s cross in between the two defenders to secure their second consecutive home win.
