Amakhosi achieve unique double over Pirates

For the first time since the inception of the Premier Soccer League in 1996, has one team won both clashes in encounters between Chiefs and Pirates.

Indeed it is the first time since 1996 that both games have ended with a winner and loser and not in a draw.

Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp applauded the Chiefs faithful on his way into the tunnel at the end of an energy draining encounter at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

The eagerly awaited return clash billed by Pirates and their supporters as the demolition derby, turned out to be another gold and black day in Johannesburg as the summer sent over the city of gold making the FNB Stadium glitter in all its golden glory.

The game began slowly with neither team taking any chance early on, with both being cautiously defensive.

It was the Amakhosi who took the initiative on a carbon copy of their first goal in the October derby when David Obua scored from a set piece.

Once again a Chiefs set piece on the right was superbly taken by Mototo who found David Obua lurking at the far post he met the ball with precision and accuracy to beat Chansa in the Pirates goal.

Soon after scoring Chiefs lost Ghanaian striker Louis Agyemang to a knee injury, he hobbled off and was replaced by Zambian international Songwe Chalwe.

As half time approached Chiefs were forced into making their second forced change with Ditheko Mototo leaving the field of play through injury replaced by Gerald Sibeko.

Just before the break Pirates had the opportunity to level matter, but Isaac Chansa found Baron to be in an un giving mood as the Chiefs keeper superbly turned over a long range thunderbolt from the Zambian.

Chiefs too could have added to their tally going into half time but Songwe Chalwe could not turn a ball threaded through the Pirates defence by midfielder Arthur Zwane into the Pirates net.

If the first half started off at pedestrian pace the second stanza began at a frantic pace with both teams attacking at will, Chiefs had the first big break of the second half when a David Radebe cross found Thabo Mooki in space.

The veteran midfielders snap shot went under Chansa but was cleared off the line by Tshabalala acting as the last line of defence for Pirates.

For the last fifteen minutes of the game Pirates threw all they had into getting something out of the game and lay siege to the Chiefs goal, which called for Baron to make some big saves.

First the Chiefs net minder saved a close range effort from Benedict Vilakazi inside the six yard box, Vilakazi should have done better but Baron read the diminutive midfielders movements well.

With five minutes to go Pirates had thought that Chabalala had given them the tonic they wanted to quench their thirst for points, but Emile Baron doused any hopes they had once more with a blinder of a save.

When referee Jerome Damon blew the final whistle a deafening roar filled the FNB Stadium as Chiefs celebrated another historic and well deserved victory of their arch rivals and log leaders.

The Amakhosi will be happy with the three points and the fact that they have cut Pirates lead at the top of the PSL and will now turn their attention to Golden Arrows and Black Leopards who they face over the next two weeks before the PSL goes into recess ahead of the African Cup of Nations.
