On an afternoon when the two teams, Chiefs and Swallows were celebrating half a century milestone for very different milestones, the two Soweto rivals left the stadium in Germiston with a share of the spoils. Swallows who were celebrating their sixtieth birthday on Sunday found a second half equalizer through Henrico Botes; this after Chiefs had taken the lead early in the first half courtesy of a Kaizer Motaung Junior's penalty.
Kaizer Junior playing in his fiftieth game for Chiefs was brought down after inside the Swallows penalty area, managed to find his twelfth goal of the season by converting the spot kick now finds himself in second place on the goal scoring charts with twelve goals.
Many of the fans had not taken up their seats at the Germiston Stadium when Tinashe Nengomasha won the ball from Swallows from the kick off, and stormed away from his marker George Hummel. Nengomasha made his way into the Swallows 18 yard area and at the first site of goal he shoot towards Swallows goalkeeper Greg Etafia, and went inches close to giving Chiefs the lead after just 30 seconds into the match.
A few minutes later and The Amakhosi with the assistance of goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez launched another attack; Fernandez sent the ball long from a free kick well inside the Chiefs half which was met by the head of Shaun Bartlett, who flicked the ball in the direction of Kaizer Motaung Junior, who collected the ball and ran into the Swallows penalty area where he was brought down by Etafia. Referee Abdul Ebrahim wasted no time in pointing to the spot; Motaung picked himself up and at the second time of asking got the ball into back of the net to score his twelfth goal of the season.
A quarter of an hour into the game and some good work by Arthur Zwane down the right, saw Zwane sell Swallows a dummy. Instead of crossing the ball into the danger area, he played a ball across the ground towards Kaizer Motaung Junior. Lefa Tsutsulupa managed to cut the ball out and his attempted clearance fell only as far as David Mathebula, who knocked the ball with some pace towards Etafia, but the ball rolled just the Swallows goal.
In the sixteenth minute Japhet Zwane while played in on goal could not control his shot from inside the Chiefs 18 yard area and knocked the ball over Fernandez. A minute later from a free kick taken by Cecil Oerson - George Hummel was able to meet the ball with his head but put too much power behind his effort and headed over Fernandez cross bar.
In what was a frantic passage of play Kaizer Junior in the 18th minute found himself in acres of space after being played in on goal by Arthur Zwane, with a fantastic defense splitting pass with all the time to pick his spot Kaizer Junior wasted the chance by knocking the ball softly back to Etafia.
As halftime approached, Swallows had a crack at goal, unfortunately for Mark Haskins his thundering shot at goal could only find the side netting, as Chiefs left the field at half time leading by a goal to nil.
Swallows were looking to assert themselves on the game early in the second half and nearly found and equalizer through second half substitute Evans Gwekwerere, who like Nengomasha did for The Amakhosi in the first half. He got the ball straight from the kick off and made a dash for goal, he too could not get his shot on target and missed the opportunity to find an equalizer for his team. Rowen Fernandez was then called into action on fifty minutes and saved a Gwekwerere close range header with out much difficulty, this after the latter and had been serviced by an excellent pin point cross from Cecil Oerson. Fernandez then helped Chiefs set up an attack and again Kaizer Junior was played into a good goal scoring position, once again the Chiefs striker did not make Etafia work and shot at the Swallows keeper.
The home team finally found themselves on a level pegging after fifty one minutes as Gwekwerere back heeled the ball into the path of Botes, who struck first time with a swerving shot across the face of goal. That seemed to catch Chiefs unaware and floated past Fernandez and into the back of the net to put Swallows on a level pegging. Twenty minutes on and Louis Agyemang together with Jimmy Tau put together a number of passes which culminated in Tau having a swing at goal an acute angle, Tau shot flew past the outreached Etafia and missed its intended target on its way to safety.
In the seventy seventh minute all hope Chiefs had of winning the game virtually eroded when Tinashe Nengomasha was shown a red card for a second bookable offense, though Louis Agyemang did go close with a shot from some way out in 84th minute being a man short in the closing stages did not allow Chiefs to be as creative in attack as they would have liked. To make matters worst David Obua injured his knee towards the end of the second half which meant that Chiefs played out the last couple minutes of the game with nine men.
