The last time Chiefs defeated Cosmos in a league encounter was back in January 2005, and Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral will be hoping that his team break their two season duck against Cosmos on Saturday and win convincingly.
Ertugral by his own admission has said that coming away from this weekend’s encounter with a win will be no easy task but he is nevertheless, hopeful that his young team will be able to win against a Cosmos team who he has put amongst his list of title contenders.
While Chiefs began the season with a win Cosmos were unconvincing in their goalless draw on the opening afternoon against BidVest Wits, in typical Cosmos fashion they waited for the opposition to do all the hard work and were content with bottling them up at the back and pouncing on Wits mistakes.
Cosmos have in the past demonstrated that they are more than willing to change their game plan around when they face Chiefs; this has made them a really tricky opponent to come up against. There are general character traits in Cosmos game that make up of the fabric of what type of a team they are and typically they favor a very physical approach, and rely on their physical dominance to out muscle the opposition.
The History
Chiefs and their visitors this weekend Jomo Cosmos have a history spanning the better part of two decades and because of the fact that the origins of the two teams happen to be of the same lineage, the rivalry between the teams has been as intense as it has been intriguing down the years which has thrown up some close fought contests between the teams.
From the 1989 season until the end of the 1999 – 2000 season Cosmos were unable to beat Chiefs in a league game, the eleven year drought by Cosmos was broken on the 28th October 2000 when Macbeth Sibaya and Nkhosinathi Nhlekho were on target in a 2-0 Cosmos win.
Cosmos also formed a part of Chiefs PSL history as The Amakhosi’s first PSL fixture during the leagues inaugural season in 1996 was against Cosmos; to be exact it was on 10th August 1996 when Thabang Lebese’s solitary strike won the game for Chiefs. It was under current Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral on the 24th November 2001 that Chiefs recorded their finest victory over Cosmos, which was a 5-0 humbling of Ezenkosi during the 2001 Coca Cola Cup Final.
During the 2006 – 2007 season Chiefs and Cosmos kept fans on the edge of their seats when the two games came up against one another, during the first round game at the FNB Stadium in September last year Chris Katongo’s brace put Cosmos two goals up inside the opening twenty minutes of the game.
The Amakhosi staged a fight back and Shaun Bartlett got his first goal in a Chiefs shirt a minute after Katongo had put Cosmos 2-0 up, Chiefs comeback was complete when Kaizer Junior scored a fantastic goal five minutes from the end to level the scores in what was a four goal thrill a minute match. When the teams met for a second time last season in January this year Cosmos won the game 2-1, Chiefs goal in that was scored by Ditheko Mototo which happened to be The Amakhosi’s 500th PSL goal.
Look out for
Described as the terminator Dikgang Mabalane is one of the strong points of Cosmos game, and he is a tough competitor who enjoys being in the thick of the action and does not like to watch the game from the periphery. He has the ability to pop up from nowhere and can go from breaking down the opposition at the back, to setting his team on their way towards scoring.
In addition Cosmos have the accomplished Burundian central defender Valerie Nahayo who does not normally get a lot of attention for his outstanding work at the back for Cosmos, he has been pivotal to their success in recent years which saw them lift the Coca Cola Cup in 2005 and has played his part in guiding them to this seasons SAA Supa8 semifinals.
On Chiefs side the player to watch could be Kaizer Motaung Junior as he could well be making a come back to the Chiefs team after a lay off of more than four months, Kaizer began full training about ten days ago and he has a strong chance of featuring on Saturday.
Onismor Bhasera has gone from strength to strength over the past three months since moving to Chiefs from Maritzburg United in June, Bhasera has helped bring cover and strength for Chiefs to the trouble some left back slot. Bhasera’s darting runs up the field could help Chiefs break down what has been termed as a stubborn Cosmos back line in recent weeks.
