The date of 16 June is significant in history. The Soweto Uprising, as it is known was a series of protests led by high school students in Soweto, South Africa.
This day in history, will forever be remembered for contributing to the South African political resolve. Kaizer Chiefs would like to join the rest of South Africa to commemorate this important calendar date. This day must remind all South Africans, in particular the youth, that blood was shed for South Africa to be where it is today, and revered for the best Constitutional Democracy in the world.
The Marketing Director, Jessica Motaung conveyed a message of commemoration for the monumental day; “As Kaizer Chiefs we salute and honour the youth of 1976. The Club contributes to the development of the youth through sports and a number of Corporate Social Investment initiatives. Amakhosi senior and development players are all youth ambassadors if you think about it and are not only an inspiration to the youth but play a significant role in their communities by engaging in various youth development initiatives.”
The 1976 protest was a response to the introduction of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in local schools. Today’s youth are faced with different challenges, that of unemployment and poverty. Amakhosi would like to urge the youth to be inspired by the efforts of the estimated 20000 students who took part in the protests which began on the morning of 16 June 1976, to navigate through these challenges.
Amakhosi salutes the youth!
