Telkom took over the sponsorship of the Telkom Knockout Cup from Coca-Cola in 2006. Since then Chiefs have managed to win the trophy in 2007 – 2008, 2009 – 2010 and 2010 – 2011.
Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic was on hand at Monday’s Telkom Knockout draw to collect the trophy and he spoke of the honour of being part of another memorable moment in the clubs history.
“I wanted to take the big trophy but they gave me the small one, and then they called me back and eventually handed me the big one,” said the coach, who has led Chiefs to the title in the last two seasons.
He added, “It is really special for me to be part of the history of the team. No other team in the PSL has been able to win the trophy three times. It was a really special honour for me to be able to go up there and bring this trophy back to our cabinet permanently.”
It is the second time in PSL history that Chiefs have been able to keep this particular trophy. When it was known as the Coca-Cola Cup they also managed to win it three times in five seasons, doing so in 2001 - 2002, 2003 - 2004 and 2004 - 2005.
This year’s Telkom Knockout Cup will have a total prize purse of R14.95 million rand, which includes prize money to the participating clubs as well as rewarding players for outstanding individual performances.
