Kick Off:15h00
BIDVest Wits 0 Kaizer Chiefs 4 (2) ( 14. Tshabalala 13’&74, 23. Ngcobo 34’, 17. Lebese 86’)
Kaizer Chiefs won their fifth straight game against BIDVest Wits at the their Johannesburg home ground the BIDVest Stadium as they eased past the Students 4-0 in a Nedbank Cup last 16 ecounter to reach the quarterfinals of the competition for the first time in five seasons.
Siphiwe Tshabalala scored a goal in each half while Sthembiso Ngcobo and second half substitute George Lebese also found their way onto the score sheet to help the Amakhosi record their largest victory over Wits in any completion in the PSL era.
Chiefs maintained their shape throughout the first half in defence and a strong showing from the backline was complemented by the Amakhosi attackers making the most of their chances on the other end of the field.
Thirteen minutes of the game had elapsed when a neat through pass by Mthkozisi Yende put Tshabalala through on goal and from around 12 yards from goal he drilled the ball past Wits keeper Darren Keet to put Chiefs a goal up.
Chiefs were by far the dominant team in the first half Knowledge Musona and Ngcobo were proving to be a handful for the Wits defence, Ngcobo came close on to finding the back of the net a couple of times before he was able to finally double Chiefs lead.
Wits captain Tefu Mashamaite failed to clear Tshabalala’s corner from the right and his fluffed clearance fell to Ngcobo who a few yards from goal hit it hard down the centre in the 34th minute past Keet to double Chiefs lead.
Early in the second half Wits created their first real goal scoring opportunity of the game but Sifiso Vilakazi drilled the ball wide of goal after being played into a goal scoring position by Stanton Fredericks.
Both teams went in search of a goal Wits sought a way back and were controlling the possession at the midway stage of the first half but were struggling to break down the Chiefs defence.
Tshabalala squandered a chance when he shot wide of goal from the left after being fed the ball by Jimmy Tau in the 73rd minute, a minute later Tau surged up the wing once again and played the ball across the field to Tshabalala who had the courage to take on and beat Wits substitute Mahashe before hitting the ball from the left across goal past a stranded Keet to put Chiefs 3-0 ahead.
Six minutes from time Stanton Fredericks brought down Reneilwe Letsholonyane and from the resulting free kick Chiefs substitute Lebese curled the free kick over the Wits wall and past Keet who looked on helplessly as the ball sailed past in and into the net.
The goal ensured the Lebese who was on target for Chiefs in their previous Nedbank Cup game against Nathi Lions, has scored in each round of the competition, in second half stoppage time Wits were reduced to ten men when Sifiso Myeni was red carded for dissent.
Victory puts Chiefs into the last eight of the tournament and it is the first time that they have managed to score four goals or more against Wits since 1990 when they defeated the Students 5-1 in a league match.
