Chiefs ran out 2-1 winners over Swallows last Sunday at the ABSA Stadium in Durban and booked their place in the final of the SAA Supa8 competition, in what will be a repeat of the 2004 Supa8 Final when they meet SuperSport United towards the end of October.
In the meantime Chiefs will be packing their bags and heading back to Kwa-Zulu Natal for a league game against Lamontville Golden Arrows on Sunday, where as the dynamics of the match may be different from the Swallows game, Chiefs will be looking forward to the same kind of result.
At this stage of the league campaign many would say that the season is still in its infancy, but as it nears its teens The Amakhosi would be aiming to make sure that by the time they have played sixteen games this term it will really turn into a sweet sixteen for them.
The easiest way to achieve this will on Sunday against Lamontville Golden Arrows who like The Amakhosi have not been particularly fast out of the starting blocks this season, although they did manage to score an important victory early in September. That being a one nil defeat of defending PSL Champions Mamelodi Sundowns, Arrows match winner on the occasion came courtesy of Vusimusi Vilakazi.
The 24-year-old striker has been on some what of a hot streak even though Arrows results say some thing else, Vilakazi netted his first goal of the season when Arrows drew 2-2 with Ajax Cape Town a week before the Sundowns victory. Most recently Arrows lost their last two league games the first being a two one defeat in the Durban derby at the hands of Amazulu and the second was a nil loss away from home to Bloemfontein Celtic.
Arrows form has been erratic in recent times and Chiefs could be able to use this to their advantage and notch up their first league victory of the campaign, Chiefs also contain a psychological edge going into this crucial league encounter.
This due to the fact that The Amakhosi have defeated Arrows in the past three outings between the two teams, most recently being an SAA Supa8 quarterfinal match played at the FNB Stadium in August. Chiefs emerged the victors from that encounter thanks to a Siyabonga Nkosi goal in the first half and a second half penalty converted by David Obua.
Chiefs and Arrows first came face to face in a PSL game against each other November 2000, at a time when Arrows were competing for the first time in the top flight. The new boys got the better of Chiefs on that occasion, running home 3-1 winners and for some time held an honourable record of not having lost a league game at home to Chiefs.
All that changed in September 2005 when under Ernst Middendorp’s guidance Chiefs recorded their first victory against Arrows in a league game in Durban. They did it in emphatic style winning 3-1, as they scored twice in the first half through Serge Djiehoua and Fabian McCarthy, before Mabhuti Khanyeza pulled one back for the home team.
John Shoes Moshoeu made certain of the victory with a goal late on to record a historic first away league victory for Chiefs over Arrows. Chiefs followed up that win with a second league victory over Arrows a few months later in December 2005 with a 2-1 win at the FNB Stadium, Chiefs goals came courtesy of Songwe Chalwe and Kaizer Motaung Junior.
The home and away victories achieved by the Amakhosi against the Lamontville outfit during the 2005 – 2006, signalled the first time in the five seasons that the two teams have been doing battle in the PSL, that either one of the teams was able to do the double over the other in a give season since 2000 – 2001. Chiefs will be hoping to keep up their winning streak against Arrows on Sunday at the Chatsworth Stadium; Durban kick off for the game is expected to be at 16h45.
