Chiefs were out early Friday morning in conjunction with the Kwa-Zulu Natal department of public transport, to promote the department’s Asiphephe road safety campaign which the club has been endorsing since March this year.

Friday morning’s engagement saw Chiefs travel to Pinetown just West of Durban where the entire travelling first team playing contingent of The Amakhosi paid a visit to the Phakathi combined school, where they were a major hit with both learners and teachers.

As a number of the Chiefs players, the likes of defender Ditheko Mototo and goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, demonstrated to the kids that they could have made it big in the entertainment industry had their careers as soccer players not taken off. Mototo did a traditional Zulu dance and Khune showed off his artistry as a rapper, much to the amusement and delight of the school kids who roared with laughter and then broke out into applause once the players had wrapped up their acts.

Full Support

The principal of the Phakathi combined school Mr. Vincent Thembinkosi Ndlovu in his welcome address to the Chiefs contingent pledged his and his schools full support for the club.

“I do not think that you will find another school in this country where all the learners and teachers are Kaizer Chiefs fans, at the Phakathi Combined School we are all Amakhosi 4 Life”.

Furthermore the principal thanked Chiefs for taking time out to come and preach the message of pedestrian safety to his schools, as he explained “We take various things for granted in life, a basic thing like crossing the street can turn into tragedy but if we educate kids on basic road safety principals like Chiefs have done we can help avoid unnecessary tragedy”.

Amakhosi behind Asiphephe

According to Chiefs Communications manager Thebe Mohatle, The Amakhosi were on an educational mission in Pinetown, and had to communicate certain important messages to the school on Friday.

“We do not do these community visits just to show face here, we come to the these far reaches to interact with the community as we have a duty to carry out and on Friday that was to talk to the kids about Pedestrian safety. In our small way we will try to ensure that we can reach as many people as possible and give them tips on what measures they can take so that they do not become road accident statistics”.

Chiefs rounded off their Friday morning trip to Pinetown as they proceeded to a public park in the CBD area of Pinetown and conducted a public awareness programme relating to the Asiphephe initiative. Hundreds of fans came out of various business and surrounding office blocks to catch a glimpse of The Amakhosi the long line of autograph hunters kept the local police busy as they had to close off a busy intersection of the city to allow the public to gain easy access to the Chiefs players.
