Orlando Pirates (0) 0 Kaizer Chiefs (1) 3 (Ngcobo 11’ & 65’, Tshabalala 72’)
For the second time in three weeks the Amakhosi managed to score three goals against their Soweto neighbors and rivals Orlando Pirates as they cruised to a 3-0 victory over the Buccaneers in the Telkom Knockout Cup Final, to record their largest victory over Pirates since the inception o the PSL in the 1996 – 1997 season.
Sthembiso Ngcobo was the Amakhosi’s hero scoring a brace the lanky striker was on target in the 11th minute as he made the most of a mistake by Pirates keeper Moeneeb Josephs to put Chiefs ahead.
His second was a sublime header past Josephs in the 65th minute, Siphiwe Tshabalala completed the win with a fantastic finish from close range in the 72nd minute.
Chiefs had a chance early on in the game and made the most of Pirates defensive lapse in the 11th minute, Knowledge Musona put Josephs under pressure when he collected a back pass and the keeper kicked the ball straight to Ngcobo.
Who managed to keep his cool and blasted the ball under the legs of Rooi Mahamutsa to beat the Pirates keeper from around 20 yards from goal.
Chiefs were pretty much in control of the game in the first half and Pirates were relegated to shooting at goal from distance without much luck, their frustration told when Rooi Mahamutsa was booked for committing to fouls first on Musona in the 29th minute and two minutes later on Ngcobo.
Seven minutes before half time it took an acrobatic backward dive from Khune to tip the ball over the cross bar off a well executed header from Happy Jele who rise above the Chiefs defence to meet a cross from the left.
Josta Dladla missed a glaring header for Chiefs in the 39th minute heading Ngcobo’s lay up from the right over the goal.
Pirates came out at Chiefs in the second half in search of an equalizer and it took some strong defending from the Amakhosi to keep them at before Punch Masenamela whipped in a cross from the left.
Ngcobo met the ball perfectly and got enough power on it to send it beyond the despairing diving Josephs in the 65th minute, Chiefs made sure of their 13th Telkom Knockout Cup final when some good overall play ended with Tshabalala driving the ball low past Josephs from close range to make it 3-0 in the 72nd minute to ensure that the defending champions held onto their title.
For Pirates it was their sixth loss in the final of this competition while for Chiefs it was their sixth success in this competition in the last ten seasons.
