It was an endeavour by the United States Soccer Federation and the US Embassy in South Africa, to assist in the development of soccer in the country that allowed for a meeting between representatives from Chiefs and one of the world renowned female soccer players in the world Shannon MacMillan.
MacMillan, who has represented her country at international level for the past thirteen years, was at a function held in her honour by the Deputy Chief of Mission of the United States in South Africa in Johannesburg on Friday night where she was presented with a Kaizer Chiefs jersey.
She was handed the jersey by Chiefs brand manager Dara Carroll and communications manager Thebe Mohatle, which prompted the Olympic as well as FIFA Woman’s World Cup winner to comment “somehow I feel like I have just signed for the Kaizer Chiefs by being given this jersey, on a serious note it is an honour for me to be in South Africa and help with the development of soccer here”.
An icon in her home country MacMillan began playing soccer at the age of five and as Chiefs brand manager Dara Carroll explains she has been an inspiration to many, “Shannon’s achievements in the world of football have really inspired a generation of young girls around the world.
The motto which she lives by is have fun and dream big from the many accolades she has won in her life she is true to that saying, for me it is an honour to meet such a football icon and present her with a Chiefs jersey” said Carroll who once held the post as Banyana Banyana team manager.
The United States football stars meeting with Chiefs personnel did not end on Friday evening as she along with the United States men’s national team coach Glenn Myernick conducted a coaching clinic for a number of players from the Kaizer Chiefs junior teams on Saturday morning.
The clinic was held at the Kaizer Chiefs academy at Shaft 17 in Nasrec close to the FNB Stadium, the pair will be in the country for a few more days.
