Chiefs striker Lehlohonolo Majoro who has scored in last three league appearances for the Amakhosi is in the squad along with Bernard Parker and goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, who has up to this point kept four clean sheets in his four outings in the Qualifiers.
Rounding off the Amakhosi contingent in the team is winger Siphiwe Tshabalala who for the third consecutive Bafana game will be given the job of captaining South Africa, Shabba wore the captains armband when Bafana earned a commendable draw with Egypt in Cairo back in June.
He was also the skipper during Bafana’s recent triumph in a friendly game over Burkina Faso earlier in August, Shabba also stands on the verge of creating history as he will become the most capped Chiefs player to have represented Bafana Bafana when he runs out to face Niger at the General Seyni Kountche Stadium in Niamey.
Although he will be making his 61st appearance for South Africa it will be his 53rd as a Chiefs player, overtaking the record of 52 caps won by former Chiefs and Bafana skipper Neil Tovey.
Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic said to kaizerchiefs.com of his players being called up for the game, “I am very happy for my players and I am confident that they will do a good job for the country. My hope is that all four of them get to play in the game.”
At the press briefing where he announced his squad to face Niger on Thursday morning, Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane lamented the fact that Amakhosi midfielder Reneilewe Letsholonyane would not be available for selection as he is recovering from a knee injury.
Bafana will assemble on Sunday at a Hotel close to the O.R. Tambo Airport in Johannesburg before departing for Rustenburg, where they will be based until their departure Friday (Sept 2) on a special chartered flight to Niamey.
They will return to Johannesburg immediately after the game on the 4th of September which is due to kick off at 16h30 South African time, victory over Niger will secure Bafana’s qualification for an eighth Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
