Having already picked up the maximum number of points with victories over Jomo Cosmos and Moroka Swallows in their opening two fixtures of the new campaign, Chiefs will be looking to continue that run with a third straight league victory when they face another of their city rivals BIDVest Wits this evening at the FNB Stadium.
The teams have already met once this season in a thrilling MTN8 Quarterfinal clash on August 7th, Chiefs won that game 2-1 courtesy of goals from Mandla Masango and Bernard Parker.
The History
Chiefs and Wits have a rivalry that goes back a long way that was perhaps at its height during the 1980’s and 1990’s when the teams met in a number of Cup Finals, overall the rivalry between the teams has always been an intense one. Of the fifty league games contested between the teams since 1985, has produced a total of 97 goals at an average of 1.94 goals per game with Chiefs scoring 65 to Wits’ 32.
The Amakhosi have also won just under half of those 50 games picking up 24 wins while 16 games have ended in a stale mate with Wits winning the remaining ten games.
Recent History
Under the guidance of Vladimir Vermezovic Chiefs have faced Wits 7 times, four times in league action and thrice in Cup games, winning five of these matches losing one and drawing another game. In addition these seven games have seen a total of 17 goals scored, with Chiefs scoring 14 of them at an average of 2 goals per game.
Since Vermezovic assumed the head coaches position at the club during the 2009 – 2010 season, this will be the fifth league game contested between the sides. Of the four previous clashes Chiefs have won two, drawn one and lost one game.
