In what was meant to be a night of football celebration as Kaizer Chiefs hosted their Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates turned out to be a night of tragedy as a number of fans lost their lives in a stampede as they tried to enter the stadium. The event marked the lowest point of South African Football in the new millennium.
On this day, when we look back, the best way to honor those who lost their lives trying to catch a glimpse of the teams they loved, is to ensure that there be no repeat of this tragedy at any sporting event in South Africa again.
Kaizer Chiefs would like to, on the eighth anniversary of this tragic event, reassure the families of those who lost loved ones on the 11th April 2001, that we are with you as you remember the fallen.
We hope you have seen beyond the tragedy towards a healing process, and we believe the mercy of GOD is constantly on the watch and the tragic memories of April 11 2001 would fade with the passing of time, but the memories of the ones we lost will always be with us.
