In an effort by the PSL to help the growth of football in and around Durban, the two semi-finalists were each taken to a secondary school to undertake a social responsibility exercise. While SuperSport paid a visit to the Isibonelo Secondary School in Kwa Mashu, The Amakhosi brought the peri-urban suburb of Inanda to a halt when Chiefs turned up at the Amadlethu Secondary School.
The Amakhosi were welcomed to the school by the more than eight hundred strong student population at the school, each member of the team was introduced to the school by Chiefs communications officer Thebe Mohatle. It came as no surprise to find that Scara Ngobese was clearly the crowd favourite, as the event wore on children from nearby primary schools clamoured around the entrance of the school to catch a glimpse of the players the get to see on television each week.
Bheki Manzi the principal of the Amadlethu Secondary School in his address to the learners said “I have since 1971 been involved with Kaizer Chiefs, as a security co-ordinator for them in Kwa-Zulu Natal and it has for a long time been a desire of mine to have them visit our school and today my dream has come true”.
Thereafter Chiefs captain Cyril Nzama handed over a set of kit and soccer balls sponsored, by South African Airways to the captain of the Amadlethu Secondary School Soccer Team.
Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy himself an advocate for assisting those less fortunate said of the days proceedings “whenever I visit a school I always remember one thing and that is that once upon a time I was one of those kids in the uniform. Somewhere somebody helped create the window of opportunity for me and if I can help be a spring board for any kid’s life I will be a happy man”.
The final act for the Chiefs players at the school was to mingle with learners from the school as they socialized with them and also handed out autograph cards and other Kaizer Chiefs memorabilia to them.
