Competition: ABSA Cup ¼ Final
Kaizer Chiefs joined Classic in the ABSA Cup semifinals, thanks to a retaken penalty by second half substitute David Obua who twice beat Johannes Diale in the Black Leopards goal to seal Chiefs passage into the next phase of the competition. In what was a game played in spells of brilliant and exciting football as well as patches that were pedestrian and at times lacked the spice one would expect out of a cup quarterfinals. The first real goal scoring opportunity came the way of Amakhosi when Cyril Nzama found himself in on goal. Chiefs captain was unable to put the ball home from close range and watched as James Mayinga cleared his effort off the line with Diale beaten.
Chiefs were once again denied by some plucky defending as Arthur Zwane crossed to Schalkwyk who slipped the ball to Louis Agyemang whose shot was once again cleared off the goal line by Mayinga, who was once again in the right place at the right time. Amakhosi showed their eagerness and hunger to progress in the competition with an end to end move as Fabian McCarthy sent a long ball up field which was neatly flicked on by Arthur Zwane. Gert Schalkwyk out sprinted Mayinga and got to the ball first, he then beat Diale and looked on as his effort went agonizingly close. As half time approached, Leopards were reduced to ten men as Allan Kamanga collected his second yellow card and was shown the door by referee Ebrahim.
If lady luck was still on her way to the FNB Stadium in the first half, she made her presence felt early on in the second half as Chiefs got the break they needed to break down the resilience of Leopards. First David Mathebula went down in the Leopards penalty area but was not given what looked like legitimate calls for a penalty. A minute later Chiefs hard work was rewarded with a penalty. Louis Agyemang was pulled down when set through on goal and David Obua stepped up to tuck the ball, referee Abdullah Ebrahim called him back to retake the spot kick. He duly obliged and sent Diale the wrong way to put Chiefs ahead and this time the spot kick stood.
The Amakhosi had a host of opportunities to have increased their margin of victory and ABSA Cup leading goal scorer Louis Agyemang could have added to his tally. He came closest on 67 minutes when his thunderous shot from distance rattled the Leopards' cross bar but was unable to roll into the back of the net.
With this hard fought victory, Chiefs will now have the remainder of the long weekend to catch their breath and wait until Tuesday to see who their opponents will be in the semifinals; Chiefs have ensured that their 100% cup record against Black Leopards remains intact. It’s all smiles for Amakhosi as they move into the ABSA Cup semifinal’s for the first time.
