A great display of football almost spoiled by ill-disciplined supporters as Orlando Pirates snatched a 2-1 win against archrivals Kaizer Chiefs in a Castle Premiership match at Soccer City on Saturday.

Crowd trouble was again the order of the day in this high tempered Soweto Derby. The field was left littered with plastic bottles, ripped up chairs, golf balls, anything and everything was thrown from the grand stands.

The Buccaneers got off to a great start scoring early on and delivering Chiefs an early setback. The Glamour Boys did manage to pull one back but were hit with a second goal in the dying minutes of the game.

Pirates stunned defending league champions Chiefs with an early goal when Phumudzo Manenzhe cut through the Chiefs defence on the first minute and squared the ball in for Gift Leremi who finished with a quality header. Steve Lekoelea had delivered the initial cross to Menenzhe.

There was commotion in Pirates box in the 21st minute, the Glamour Boys combined well and came agonisingly close to drawing level, after the ball rebounded off Zambian striker Collins Mbesuma and almost rolled into the net but for a last ditch clearance off the line.

Utility star Nhlanhla Kubeka, in the starting line-up for suspended Zimbabwean midfield workhorse, had a golden opportunity when he found himself inside the Pirates 18-yard area, but he fired his shot wide of the target.

Amakhosi continued to apply pressure and Mbesuma came close to leveling matters just before the break, but his header bounced off the crossbar.

Half-time came with Pirates leading the game 1-0. But both teams had their chances to get ahead.

The second half started with Chiefs looking to pull back a goal for the faithful Amakhosi.

Winger Arthur Zwane managed to do it in the 53rd minute when he latched onto a good pass he took his time and buried the ball with great composure. Perfectly placed shot into the bottom corner of Francs Chansa’s goal.

Defender Cyril Nzama almost put Chiefs ahead in the 64th minute but he headed the ball down into the ground and was unfortunate to see his effort bounce up over the post.

The game began to deteriorate with both teams appearing to have lost the flair they started with.

Two minutes from time Pirates put the nail in Chiefs coffin when Benedict Vilakazi found himself completely unmarked he made no mistake in scoring and giving Pirates all three points.
