Mabena stole the ball off Nahayo on the left wing in the seventh minutes and was able to quickly send the ball in towards Chansa who turned and shot towards goal, his effort lacked direction and sailed wide of goal.

On 13 minutes Tshabalala managed to dispossess Chansa of the ball around the half way line and quickly played the forward to Ngcobo, he in turn sent it wide to Lucky Khune who came racing down and blasted the ball past Pirates keeper Josephs to hand Chiefs the lead.

As the action shifted from end to end, Jambo brought down Mayambela on the edge of the Chiefs 18 yard area to give Pirates a free kick in a dangerous position. It took an acrobatic back ward dive from Bartman to push the ball with one hand over his cross bar.

Chiefs took a 1-0 lead into the second half, ten minutes after the restart Legwathi ran onto a long looping free kick which came over the Chiefs defense and he found himself in space and with no one in Gold and Black near him he headed ball past Bartman who stayed rooted to his spot.
