Kaizer Chiefs played out their second stalemate of the season in Germiston on Sunday, as The Amakhosi were unable to find the net against a resilient and tough Benoni United who made them work all the way in blistering conditions on Sunday afternoon.

After 180 minutes of league football this season Chiefs are still winless and were unconvincing in the goalless stalemate with the PSL newcomers in Germiston on Sunday.

Chiefs did have the first chance early on when David Obua curled a free kick from the edge of the Benoni box just wide. A couple of minutes after that Obua, who overall had a disappointing first half and was subsequently substituted at half time, did manage to send in a cross in the seventeenth minute which evaded all comers in the Benoni 18 yard area, including Chiefs striker Kaizer Motaung Junior who could not make contact with the ball.

As the first half wore on the home team looked the more enterprising and created one of two good goal scoring opportunities within the space of two minutes. First Thabo Mabako brought out the best in Rowen Fernandez with a volley from the right, the Chiefs keeper was at full stretch as he made himself big to push away the Benoni player’s effort.

Then on 29 minutes, United created their next chance as Goodenough Msundla weaved his way into the Chiefs penalty area. He first rode the challenge of Siphiwe Mkhonza and then tested Fernandez with a ferocious shot, but like the Benoni United players name Fernandez was good enough to make a fantastic save.

Chiefs did have a chance at goal as the first half drew to a close, but Siyabonga Nkosi could not control his header off a Jimmy Tau cross and it headed over the bar.

At the start of the second half Ernst Middendorp substituted Obua and brought on Scara Ngobese, who added spark to a Chiefs midfield that lacked ingenuity in the first half. Scara’s impact was almost immediate as he found Siyabonga Nkosi in space with a neat short ball.

The Chiefs midfielder made a run down the right and sent in a cross which floated past United keeper Tsengsna and Chiefs striker Shaun Bartlett, who could not make contact with the ball. Just after the hour mark, Fernandez was called into action again as he ran out to close down a shot from Benoni striker Sello Mhlambi to keep his goal intact and keep United from scoring.

From Fernandez's save Chiefs, counterattacked quickly as David Mathebula moved with lightening speed up the right wing and sent in a pin-point cross, which was met by the head of Kaizer Motuang Junior but Tsengsna was equal to challenge and acrobatically pushed the ball to safety.

As the game drew to a close Gert Schalkwyk could have won it for Chiefs. With an open net in front of him, Schalkwyk shot wide and high to round off what was not one of Chiefs' best performances in recent times.

Ernst Middendorp will be hoping to get his charges back onto the training ground as soon as possible to ensure that they achieve a better result and put in a better performance in their next outing against Jomo Cosmos on Wednesday night, 13th September at the FNB Stadium at 8pm.
