Kaizer Chiefs set off on Tuesday morning for the Mpumalanga Province for their first of what will be two clashes in the space of four days against BIDVest Wits, the Amakhosi will come up against the Students in an Absa Premiership clash at the Mbombela Stadium in Mbombela on Wednesday evening and will again square off with Roger De Sa’s charges in a Nedbank Cup last 16 encounter in Johannesburg on Sunday.

March was a strange month for the Amakhosi as they played in just three competitive games and they have been in active since the 13th of last month, while Wits have been kept busy with matches in the African Confederations Cup.

In order to stay in the title race Chiefs need to pick up the full number of points against Wits and will also be banking on some of their title rivals dropping points as well, mostly The Amakhosi who have played a game less than their title rivals will be looking to do their part which is to win their remaining games.

Recent history

Although the game is being played far from Wits’ Johannesburg base it still is a home game for the Students, the Amakhosi have won their last five away league games against Wits going back to the 2004-2005. Over these five matches they have had their defences breached of just two occasions that is a stat that would please Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic who will be hoping that history once again repeats itself.

The earlier clash this season between the sides played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane late last year saw Chiefs run out 1-0 winners, Knowledge Musona was the goal scorer for the Amakhosi on that occasion.

Recent form

Wits are currently sixth on the PSL standings two places below the Amakhosi who currently occupy fourth spot, The Students have won two, drawn two and lost one of their last five league games. Chiefs meanwhile have drawn their last four league games, the Amakhosi were last in competitive action on the 13th March when they defeated Nathi Lions 3-2 in a Nedbank Cup Last 32 game. Their last league game was against Free State Stars almost a month ago on March 6 a game which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Missing out

The three week recess which came Chiefs’ way as a result of the international break has given the Amakhosi the chance to mend their injured and have a full strength team to choose from for the clash with Wits. In addition Chiefs do not have any players missing through suspension.
