The young Amakhosi had drawn their opening game on Friday evening against Spanish side Valencia while their opponents in Almansa on Sunday evening were comfortable 4-0 winners over Portuguese side Benfica in their first game of the tournament on Friday. Pumas who made it to the semi finals in 2005 were hoping for a repeat result which would have seen them progress to the knock out stages with a game to spare, it was not meant to be as The Amakhosi had other ideas.
As Chiefs arrived at the venue prior to their game against the Mexicans they were the centre of attention with their song and dance, which the Spanish public took a liking to with a number of spectators signing along with the young Chiefs team. It was not just a case of noise off the field for the Chiefs youngsters as they continued dancing around their opponents on the field and were in sizzling form taking the lead early on in the first half through Kabelo Makoko, a lead they held going into the half time break. When the second half resumed the Mexicans were faster out of the starting blocks and were soon level, getting the much sought after equalizer as a Chiefs player deflected a long range shot past his own keeper into the back of the net.
The Amakhosi did not let the set back affect them and continued to push forward and took the lead for the second time in the game as Makoko completed his brace, to put Chiefs 2-1 up with a well timed shot from some way out. As time wound down Makoko completed his hat trick and made certain of the result as he scored to give Chiefs and unassailable 3-1 lead and sent The Amakhosi to the top of group 4.
With his hat trick against Pumas and another goal he scored against Valencia on Friday night Kabelo Makoko has bagged four goals in two games, Coach Ryder Mofokeng will be hoping for more of the same from him on Monday evening against Benfica in Albecete.
A draw against the Portuguese is all that Chiefs need to progress to the ¼ Finals, after losing to Valencia on Sunday Benfica can progress no further in the tournament. Victory against Benfica will also ensure that The Amakhosi finish top of their group, which will have an added advantage as they will be able to remain in Albecete and will not have to up root and move to another town for the knock out stages of the competition.
