Having lost to Swallows when the teams met earlier in the season, The Amakhosi will be looking to avenge that loss. And so will Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral who, will be having thoughts of getting one over his former assistant from his stint at Ajax Cape Town during the 2006 – 2007 season, and current Swallows coach Ian Gorowa.
Both Soweto rivals were knocked out for the Nedbank Cup on the same weekend. Swallows bowed out at the hands of Santos and Chiefs to Sundowns, which means that all that is left to play for is a spot amongst the top eight finishers in the league.
Victory over Swallows should see Chiefs leapfrog their rivals and could end off the weekend in seventh place.
The match which will be played at Olympia Park in Rustenburg, will see Chiefs return to the site of their last ABSA Premier League Fixture, which was played around a fortnight ago against AmaZulu - a game which Chiefs won by a single goal.
It also saw The Amakhosi, for the first time this season, win consecutive league matches. Ertugral and his team have the opportunity to complete a hat-trick of league wins and also keep in tact their fine away record this season, which has seen them unbeaten in eleven matches on the road this season. Of their eleven away games this season, Chiefs have garned 17 points, 4 more than the 13 they picked up in twelve matches played at home.
Earlier in the season
Swallows ran out 2-1 winners over Chiefs back in November last year when the Amakhosi hosted The Birds at the ABSA Stadium in Durban. It was a true derby match full of the usual intensity and drama associated with the rivalry between the two teams.
It was the visitors though who took the lead in a four-minute spell in the second half as Swallows managed to find two goals, first Sandile Ndlovu walked a the ball home from close range, and four minutes later it was
2-0 as former Amakhosi player Bevan Fransman got The Birds' second goal.
The introduction of Thabo Mooki and David Obua a minute either side of each Swallows goal helped swing the advantage towards Chiefs, and Shaun Bartlett scored in the 74th minute to cut the deficit. The visitors had two men sent off in the match - first Japhet Zwane got his marching orders in the 81st minute, and deep into second-half injury time Bevan Fransman joined him when he was sent off for remonstrating with the assistant referee.
