Kaizer Chiefs earned their third consecutive draw in 2010 after being held to a disappointing goalless draw by Golden Arrows in front of 11 000 fans at the impressive Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Glamour Boys had the better of the exchanges in the first half, with Knowledge Musona sending his shot just wide inside 15 minutes of the game and then seven minutes later forcing goalkeeper, Khuzwayo, to pull a good save from a one-on-one situation.
Chiefs continued to probe and again came close to opening the scoring in the 40th minute, when Nkosinathi Nhleko dragged his shot wide after he was brilliantly set up by captain, Jimmy Tau. It was another good outing for Jimmy Tau, whose daunting runs down the right gave Golden Arrows problems.
Arrows, who had their backs against the wall for the better part of the first half, did force Arthur Bartman to make a save with Njabulo Manqana testing him with a low shot after the veteran goalkeeper had initially parried Richard Henyekane’s corner kick.
Knowledge Musona, searching for his fifth goal of the season, watched his well-taken shot with his weaker left foot come off the post, 0-0 at halftime.
The Glamour Boys started the second half the way they finished the first half, with Mthokozisi Yende’s strike going just wide. The former Pretoria University midfielder was given a role just in front of Tinashe Nengomasha and might have impressed the Technical Team with his vision in the middle of the park.
The second half though, belonged to Golden Arrows, but the lack of composure, combined with the presence of the experienced Arthur Bartman, kept the score on level terms.
The Glamour Boys continued to look dangerous every time they got the chance to move forward and they nearly surprised the hosts when Mandla Masango forced a another superb save from Khuzwayo in the 68th minute.
Vladimir Vermezovic introduced Abia Nale, Josta Dladla and Jose Torrealba in the place of Mandla Masango, Mthokozisi Yende and Nkosinathi Nhleko, but it was too late as Amakhosi failed to break the deadlock.
The draw did not do the boys from Phefeni any favours in their hunt for the Absa Premiership and they will have to wait a little bit longer before they can put their hands on the coveted trophy.
They will be hoping to register their first win in 2010 next Wednesday (February 17) when they welcome PSL strugglers, Mpumalanga Black Aces, at Loftus Stadium. Kick-off is at 7:30pm.
