Kaizer Chiefs                               (1) 1 (Parker 44’)

Golden Arrows                           (1) 3 (Lamola 4’, 48’, Ndwandwe 95’)

Kaizer Chiefs lost 3-1 to Golden Arrows in an Absa Premiership match at KwaMashu’s Princess Magogo Stadium on Tuesday evening. Amakhosi played with 10 men for most of the game after Leonardo Castro got his marching orders. The Glamour Boys showed good spirit though and were the better team for most of the game.

It was the first match in charge for interim coach Patrick Mabedi. He made a few changes compared to Saturday’s Nedbank Cup loss to Free State Stars with Ramahlwe Mphahlele, George Maluleka and Leonardo Castro coming back into the starting XI.

Chiefs suffered two early set-backs in the game. The first was the Arrows goal already in the fourth minute via their striker Lerato Lamola.

The second set-back was the red-card for Leonardo Castro in the 17th minute after stamping with his foot on the opponent’s leg.

However, it was good to see that the Glamour Boys picked up their game thereafter, starting to dominate the home side despite a man down.

Bernard Parker worked hard up-front, while Joseph Molangoane, who switched to operate on the left side, also regularly showed his class.

Amakhosi were the better side for the last 20 minutes of the first half and that while playing with 10 men after Castro’s sending off.

The wait was for the goal and it arrived in the 44th minute. Molangoane dribbled past his marker and gave an excellent through-ball deep to Parker, who chipped the ball over the Arrows goalkeeper to equalise. It was Parker’s third goal in this season’s league campaign.

It was a good fight-back of Kaizer Chiefs.

But there was another set-back early in the second half when, again, Lamola scored for the home side to make it 2-1 in the 48th minute.

The Chiefs players fought hard to come back into the game. Willard Katsande, as usual, fought for every ball in midfield, while Maluleka also made a fine return to the starting XI. Another who did well was Siphiwe Tshabalala, distributing the ball nicely around.

Molangoane, meanwhile, continued to be a threat to the Arrows defence, having a good match. He moved in the second half to the right wing.

Interim coach Patrick Mabedi made two changes halfway the second half, bringing on Philani Zulu (for Tsepo Masilela) and Dumsani Zuma (for Parker).

At that stage, Chiefs were again dominating the game, even though the home side had a one-man advantage. However, it didn’t result in too many goalscoring opportunities.

Although there was a clear chance for Erick Mathoho after getting the ball from Gustavo Páez, who had come on minutes earlier as a substitute. But ‘Tower’ failed to hit the target.

The Glamour Boys showed character and fighting spirit, but in the end it wasn’t enough to find the goal the team fully deserved to get.

To make matter worse, Arrows added another goal from a counter-attack just before the final whistle of the referee to make it 3-1.

Key moment in the match:

That must be the moment that Leonardo Castro was sent off by the referee for stamping on his opponent’s leg. It meant that Kaizer Chiefs had to play with 10 men after barely 17 minutes of play.

Most Valuable Player (MVP):

Joseph ‘Tight’ Molangoane was lively and always looked threatening whenever in possession of the ball. Bernard Parker did excellently in the first half, but slipped a bit in the second. But it was Golden Arrows striker Lerato Lamola who was selected as the Absa Premiership Man of the Match for scoring a brace.
