Nedbank Cup Last Eight
Kaizer Chiefs were eliminated by Vodacom League outfit Baroka FC in the last eight stage of the Nedbank Cup at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Chiefs took the lead but Baroka fought back and won the game 2-1.
Knowledge Musona gave Chiefs the lead in the 36th minute as he scored his 18th goal of the season, Baroka levelled the scores when Tom Ndlovu headed them level a minute before time. Thobani Mncwango stunned the large number of Chiefs fans in attendance at the game when he scored the game winner on 90 minutes.
Five minutes in Musona had a shot deflected for a corner, shortly thereafter Thobani Mncwango sent the ball wide of goal for Baroka. Punch Masenamela’s perseverance in the 13th minute down the left saw him send in a pin pointcross towards goal although George Lebes go onto the end of the pass he sent his header wide of goal. cross Lebese in front of 23 head wide in front of goal
Three minutes later Mandla Masango weaved past the defence and unleashed a powerful shot towards goal which Avhashoni Tshinuna blocked, Stanton Lewis ran onto the rebound and passed it wide to Musona who tapped it home, somehow the goal was ruled on an offside goal.
In the 26th minute Katlego Mashego managed to set Mncwango free and he went for goal from around 25 yards out and it took a fine one hand save from Khune to sotp Baroka from taking the lead. Just past half hour Lewis won the ball on the edge of the Baroka penalty are and laid it off to Musona who sliced his effort wide of goal.
Three minutes on Jimmy Tau made an overlapping run down the right wing and was played on into space by Masango, Boyboy Thomo attempted to intercept the ball but knocked the ball into the path off Musona who blast the ball into the roof of the net.
Baroka tried to hit back immediately and Khune came up with another big save on 38 minutes as he stuck out hand to turn Msimeci Baloyi’s effort from left Khune full length to stick out a hand and sent the ball out for a corner.
Letsholonyane sent the ball crashing onto the underside of the bar with a powerful shot from the edge of the 18 yard area, after Lewis had done well but injured himself in winning the ball and setting him up three minutes before half time.
As Chiefs attack broke down Baroka launched a counter attack and won a corner on the left, from which Sam Ndlovu managed to run between the Chiefs defenders and with a glancing header sent the ball wide of Khune to level the scores in the final minute of the first half.
Eight minutes after the restart Musona slipped as he made contact with a pass from the left and as a result the ball went straight to Tshinuna. Soon after Sthembiso Ngcobo sent the ball wide of goal Lebese disposed ball fell to Ngcobo blasted the ball wide of goal.
Chiefs had a host of chances to have won the game and in the pressed for a winner in the final ten minutes, in the 81st minute Musona’s free kick was parried by Tshinuna and it fell Thomas Sweswe who drove the ball straight at the legs of the keeper.
Sixty seconds later Masenamela threaded the ball wonderfully through to Musona with the goal in front of him he sent the ball wide of goal, Chiefs continued to pile the pressure on and should have sealed the game five minutes from time when Dladla’s inviting cross from the left the Baroka defenders missed the ball as did Masango who failed turned the ball home from a few yards from goal.
In the final minute of the game Baroka won a series of corners on the left, the second of which was floated to the back post and was headed back goal wards and eventually fell back to Mncwango who slammed it past Khune and into the roof of the net to send Baroka through to the last four.
