Although he had to leave the match later on through injury during the November game against Leopards, Shaun had made his mark and with three more goals in matches that followed Shaun rounded off the year by scoring in five of Chiefs last five league games of 2006.
With Chiefs entering the final phase of the current seasons with five games to go, Shaun is looking at repeating if not bettering that feat as he aims to close off the season with 15 goals to his name. Shaun spoke of his ambition to catch Chris Katongo and net seven more goals in Chiefs final five games of the season, to kaizerchiefs.com on Thursday Afternoon.
KC.COM: Shaun, when Chiefs played Black Leopards earlier in the season you got Chiefs opening goal of the game, which set the team on the way to a memorable 3-1 win. Can we expect more of the same from you on Sunday when Chiefs host Leopards at Loftus in Tshwane?
Shaun Bartlett: I don’t think that I speak just for myself when I say that as a team we are aiming to finish off the season with a flood of goals. Personally I would like to score as many goals as possible over the next five games. I have set my sights on finishing off the season with around 15 goals, so yes I would like to again be on the score sheet against Leopards and in the following games against Santos and Pirates.
KC.COM: With just five games to go do you think that you can score seven more goals, do you think that is a realistic target?
SB: Given the way the team has been playing over the past two games I do feel that at the least a goal a game is possible, the guys have been creating a number of opportunities for the front men and it is down to me to finish them off. I do believe that scoring seven more goals and taking my tally for the season to 15 goals is well within my reach. I have to have confidence in my abilities and that of my teammates, I will definitely give everything I have towards achieving the set target.
KC.COM: For the visit of Leopards Kaizer Junior will be missing, will you miss him upfront?
SB: The thing is that he and I have formed a good partnership up front and I do enjoy playing with him. Kaizer is a good strong player and he is a deadly finisher, and those qualities mean that whoever takes his place will have big shoes to fill on Sunday. However challenging it may be, we will have to work without him and I am sure that we will come through against Leopards with a good healthy win. With him obviously the scoring duties fall to me and like I said earlier at the moment my only intention is to score as many goals as possible.
KC.COM: Many people are of the opinion that without anything to play for as the season winds down, it will be difficult to motivate the team towards putting up an outstanding show in their remaining games?
SB: That kind of thinking is not healthy at all because just having the opportunity to put on the teams’ jersey should be enough to motivate any player, towards playing at his best and giving his all. There is a lot for us still to play for and the number one thing is pride, we cannot just walk out onto the field for the remaining games because we have to play them. Believe me there is a lot at stake for the entire team - a number of guys have individual goals and the rest of the team is motivated towards helping them achieve those objectives. An example is the fact that Kaizer Junior is on target to ending the season as the top goal scorer in the league, we all have to rally around to help him get there. These remaining games are just as important to us as the first couple of games of the season were and we still aiming to finish the season as high on the standings as possible.
KC.COM: To conclude do you feel a second place finish is within Kaizer Chiefs grasp?
SB: Yes I think so - we just need to focus our minds on it and set it out to get to number two and I think we will get there. We have five games left for the season and a lot of things can happen in five games. The chance to get to second is there we just need to take it and make sure we finish the season strongly and that is what we will be aiming for.
