Bartlett aiming for PSL glory in 07-08

Posted in News on Aug 08, 2007.

During his first season with The Amakhosi Shaun Bartlett was on a roll in December 2006 as he scored five goals in four games for Chiefs and was finding the back of the net with ease, he was expected to continue his hot streak in front of goal into the New Year.

Unfortunately for him it was not to be as Bartlett injured himself inside the first five minutes of Chiefs first match of 2007 against SuperSport in early January, The Amakhosi lost the services of Bartlett for two months as he returned t action in March. With the 2007 – 2008 season a week away from kicking off the former Bafana Bafana captain, is well aware that the millions of Chiefs fans around the world will be expecting the PSL trophy to make a return to Naturena at the end of the season. Bartlett opened up to kaizerchiefs.com as to what he feels can be achieved by the club in the coming season and his of will to score more goals than he did in 06-07.

KC.COM: Many people say there is course for concern given the fact that Chiefs have won just one out of five pre-season games. What is your take on that?

SB: Personally I feel that much cannot be made out of pre-season games because they are actually being played for a host of reasons, amongst them being for players to improve their fitness and get match fit for the season ahead. There is nothing riding on these games so as a player you use them to do what I had previously said and also it is a chance for us to get used to playing with the new guys, if I look at it in that light then I will have to say that we have had pretty successful pre-season.

KC.COM: Talking about the new players, how have they fitted into the team’s pattern of play?

SB: The last couple of months have been a learning curve for a number of us as a new coach has come taken over the reigns, he has come with new ideas and a different approach as well different method and tactics. So it is not just the new guys who had to fit in we have all had to adapt to the new coach, thankfully it was a process whereby we could all begin with together from the beginning so to speak. The guys have all responded well to the new coach the new systems, we have gained a lot of positives out of the new season, I can say that we do have the self belief and determination to win the league this season.

KC.COM: As a team what are the guys hoping to achieve this coming season?

SB: The first thing is that we are looking to be more successful as a team, last season we won one trophy and this time we will be looking to add more silverware to that. We want to be successful on the pitch and will aim to do so by playing positive and productive football, which the fans and the critics will appreciate. Basically we will be looking towards finding some consistency in our play, we cannot play magnificently well in our game and go off the ball in the next we need to have and equally high standard of play with the same amount of commitment in every game.

KC.COM: Even though the pre-season results might not have been the desired ones, the team did play some entertaining football. Particularly in the Vodacom Challenge game against Tottenham Hotspurs where you managed to find the back of the net?

SB: The guys really enjoyed playing in that game and so did I, our overall performance against Spurs helped us to demonstrate exactly the kind of football that we are able to play and that on any given day we can be a handful for any team. With regards to the goal I scored it was a really well worked team goal, the build up play from the back was excellent Bhasera timed his run perfectly and I was able to get on to the end of his cross and it was nice to get a goal especially against Spurs and my old friend Darren Bent.

KC.COM: What can we expect from Shaun Bartlett this coming season?

SB: I have set myself a number of targets with one of my main aims being to play in more games then I did during my first season with Chiefs, as well as scoring more goals and helping the team win games and ultimately Cup titles and the league championships.
