Head Coach, Stuart Baxter revealed that he was delighted with the win that took the Glamour Boys back to the top of the Absa Premiership standings as they beat Black Leopards by 2-1 at Soccer City Complex on Wednesday evening.
On form Bernard Parker and Siphiwe Tshabalala who was given a rest last Saturday netted for the Glamour Boys in a rematch after the initial game was abandoned due to hail storm last Saturday
“I am pleased with the three points. I thought we did well in patches and if you would combine those patches I think in the 90 minutes we would have done well.
“We off course came here following the game that was abandoned and I was asked a lot leading to the game on how we were going to keep the fires burning. I was bit concerned and losing Siyabonga (Nkosi) the night before the game did not help us.
“We seem to put our foot off the paddle late in the first half allowing Black Leopards who looked more of a threat than the last time to attack us. We spoke to the team at half time and we seem to play better and until we scored the second goal. It was after that that we became sloppy.
“I would have been happy with the 2-0 score. I think our goalkeeper, Itu (Itumeleng Khune) did superbly well today. He did not make outstanding saves but had to deal with lot of high balls and crosses and was very solid. I think he deserved to keep a clean sheet this evening.
Baxter also explained the reasons for keeping Mashamaite in the game after suffering an injury on his head; “He is a warrior and went to him as he was getting treatment outside; he said to me; “Coach please do not take me off,”. All he wanted was to fight for the team and I think he only made one mistake when he held on the ball for long otherwise other than that I was pleased with the performance of the team.
“The players continue to enjoy training and playing games. They are winning games we just have to keep on working hard. This weekend with no games it is going to give the players time to get little bit of rest before we embark on a long journey to Mpumalanga to face Bidvest Wits on Monday, 24 September 2012,” added Baxter.
Top of the table, Glamour Boys are the first team to reach double figures in the Absa Premiership with 10 points after four games. Chiefs have won two games at home; one win away and one draw away and have scored a total of 10 goals.
