Kaizer Chiefs Head Coach, Stuart Baxter dismissed suggestions that the Glamour Boys are ‘favourites’ to win the league title this season after having gone five points clear in the Absa Premiership log standing after beating Bidvest Wits by 3-1 at Mbombela Stadium on Heritage Day.
Bernard Parker scored a brace before substitute, Lehlohonolo Majoro buried a third goal for Amakhosi after Bidvest Wits had pulled a goal back late in the game.
Baxter was not pleased with Bidvest Wits pulling a goal back before Majoro came and to score the third one; “We had a great balance today, a solid at the back,” noted Baxter speaking to kaizerchiefs.com after the pulsating encounter.
“In the beginning of second half with one or two long balls we lost a bit of shape especially in the centre of the midfield. I think mentally we did not get ourselves ready for the second half even though we spoke about it at half time.
“I was not happy that we almost allowed Wits to come back to the game when they pulled a goal back in the 80th minute. We allowed this to happen against Mamelodi Sundowns at Soccer City and against Black Leopards last Wednesday. This is something that we need to address.
“We need to continue working hard and addressing some of the grey areas. It is still early days before people can start talking about Chiefs being favourites. We are leading with only five points and in football that margin is not huge.
“I have seen in some league that I have worked in teams leading by seven points early but lose the momentum. It is important that we keep the momentum. Teams are going to get more difficult as we go along and mentally we need to be prepared for the battles ahead.
The Briton paid tribute to Lehlohonolo Majoro who scored his first goal of the season; “He is a good player and we all know what ‘Major’ is capable off. Kingston Nkhatha has been terrific for us and hence ‘Major’ has not really cracked it in the starting line-up but there is no doubt that he is quality and once again he proved that with a well taken goal.
Chiefs will be sweating on the Siboniso Gaxa’s injury that was replaced in the second half due to injury; “We have quite a few injuries already and we are keeping our fingers crossed that the injury on Pa is not a serious one. He will go for a scan on Tuesday morning to determine the extent of the injury. Masha (Tefu Mashamaite) also sustained a hip injury and he will also undergo a scan back in Johannesburg.
“I would like to congratulate my players for once again giving their all. The fans came out in numbers and it is always good for us to give back to them. They are the 12th men on the pitch and their support since the start of the season has been tremendous,” added Baxter.
