Head Coach, Stuart Baxter told the media following an emphatic 2-1 victory against Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday that he was pleased with the way his charges played and is hoping the win will set the tone for the season ahead.
The game came alive in the second half when birthday boy, Siyabonga Nkosi muscled his way through Sundowns defence before unleashing a powerful shot with his left foot beating Wayne Sandilands and immediately after that Kingston Nkhatha added the second one.
Sundowns reduced the deficit through Clayton Daniels but the night belonged to the Glamour Boys who claimed the victory at home.
“I think we started a bit slow and at times we tried to force transition. Things were not really working out for us in the opening stages of the game. “
“We spoke to the players at halftime and we started stepping up in the second half where we scored two quick goals. We were also a bit more aggressive going forward in the second half and I was really pleased with the attitude of the players.”
“Sundowns’ goal came a little bit fast. I thought we were going to add the third goal and I was little bit disappointed when we did not add to the scoresheet. This forced us to fight until the end but I have to be pleased with the victory this evening.”
Baxter congratulated Siyabonga Nkosi who was celebrating his 31st birthday on the evening; “I was not aware it was his birthday today. I will definitely wish him all the best. His goal was class. He made things a little bit difficult for himself in the first half but he was alive in the second half and started playing really well.”
“I am also quite pleased that we have opened with a win at home. It is very important that we win our games at home this season. It is now two against two but it is early for us to start talking about the title. I do hope though this win will set a tone for us for the rest of the season. We need to keep going and take it one game at a time. We will again go back to the training ground to try and improve and work on our game.”
The Briton lamented the injury of defender Morgan Gould who could be out for four to six months; “It is a big blow for us. I told the players that I am not really worried about Morgan. He is a warrior. He will come back and play for us and his country; but I am worried about you (players). What is it that you can offer? The players responded well and I was very pleased.”
“Masha (Tefo Mashamaite) is a good player and he showed this evening that he can do the job in the centre of the park. We will look at possibilities but it is hard to imagine if you can get a player in a South African market now. We can maybe go on loan or we might have to look overseas. The injury to Morgan only happened on Tuesday night and we are still going to map a way forward as the Club. That is all I can say now,” added Baxter.
Chiefs went into the game determined to keep up the momentum of competing and at the same time upholding this season’s spirit of Reclaiming The Glory! Amakhosi will be traveling to Charles Mopeli on the 1st of September 2012 to honour an ABSA Premiership fixture against Free State Stars.
