An optimistic Kaizer Chiefs Head Coach, Stuart Baxter has urged his charges to improve their mental strength and discipline if they are to stand up and be counted this season.

The mighty Amakhosi took a lead in the first half through a 21st minute strike from Lehlohonolo Majoro only to allow Maritzburg United to equalise in the dying seconds of injury time through a header from Terrence Mandaza.

“We came up against one of the top teams in the league in Maritzburg United. We expected them to be tough in their own backyard. I feel though we controlled the game in the first half and scored a goal. We were in control of the game.

“In the second half we got pressed back a little bit. We did create a couple of chances from transition and I feel that we should have put them away. We should have killed the game.

“There was always a possibility of them pulling a goal back if we do not score and it happened in the dying seconds. We were all disappointed in the manner we gave away the lead.

“We need to be stronger mentally if we are to challenge for honours this season. We also need to be more disciplined in the last 10 minutes of the game and I felt that both these elements lacked in the last 10 minutes against Maritzburg.

“Due to injuries we were forced to reshuffle our back four and when we introduced Lincoln (Zvasiya) for Tower (Eric Mathoho) they started putting high balls on the box which also put us under pressure.

“All in all we were able to come away with a point so we should be pleased with that. I am hoping that this week we will be able to get some of the injured players ready for our home game against Golden Arrows next week.

“We will go back to the training ground and prepare what is going to be a challenging month in November. We have to keep on fighting. I still have faith in the squad and we all know what is expected of us. We have to keep working and improving and we have a squad to bounce back to winning ways this coming month,” added Baxter.

Chiefs remain on top of the Absa Premiership with 18 points after 8 games.
