“Today is a day of celebration,” Kaizer Chiefs Chairman Kaizer Motaung reflected after the Absa Premiership trophy was handed over. “I have witnessed all of our 12 league titles won, but this was a great finale… Probably the best I have ever seen.”
When explaining his reasons for these words, the Chairman added: “The atmosphere in the stadium was something out of this world. And let’s be honest, where will you see that in a packed stadium, with a capacity of 42 000, the away team’s supporters dominate the crowd with about 90 percent.”
“The season started well when the team gave me a nice early birthday present by winning the MTN8,” said Motaung with a smile on his face. “Now we also won the league title in our 45th anniversary year.” Chiefs were founded on 7 January 1970, winning their first league title in 1974.
“It’s also about how we won the league trophy,” continued Motaung. “We smashed a few records on the way. Also, the way we grabbed the title, with three matches still to go. That was very satisfying.”
Amakhosi won the league with a record of 69 points (since the league went to 16 clubs in 2002). Another record is that Chiefs collected 21 wins this season (the previous record was 20 wins, set by Sundowns last year). The Club also went on a 19 game unbeaten streak, which is another record as well as the 12 points gap to the No 2 side (a record since the start of the PSL in 1996, the previous record was eleven points set by Mamelodi Sundowns in 1999).
Another amazing example of how well Chiefs did this season is the 70percent win-percentage. When Baxter won his first league title in charge of the Amakhosi it was 50percent and, despite not conquering the Absa Premiership in 2014, last season’s win-percentage was 63,3.
“We had a good run,” concluded Motaung, “with several players enjoying excellent seasons.”
