Mamelodi Sundowns(0) 2 (Meza 61, Sirino, pen 90+5’)

It took Kaizer Chiefs 45 minutes to destroy defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2019 edition of the Shell Ultra Helix Cup. Amakhosi scored four goals in the first half of the match without any reply from their opponents from Pretoria.

Going into this match, Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp kept the core of the team that played the last league game against Lamontville Golden Arrows and made three changes in the starting XI. Sundowns on the other hand saved their big guns for the second half of the match as they started with a changed team.

Chiefs started like a house on fire, asking questions in the early minutes. Khama Billiat and Leonardo Castro did all the damage as they combined well to set up and convert the goals.

The opening goal came in the 9th minute courtesy of Leonardo Castro. The goal was followed by two more stunners by the Colombian striker. Castro scored a hattrick with all assists provided by Khama Billat.

Late in the second half Castro returned the favour by laying on a great ball for Billat to register his name on the score sheet.

Both teams made changes in the second half as Chiefs brought on players such as Keletso Sifama, Sizwe Twala, Bernard Parker, Siphelele Ntshangase and Kabelo Mahlasela,

Seeing danger after going 4-0 down in the first half, Pitso Mosimane introduced Ali Meza, Kennedy Mweene, Gaston Sirino, Tebogo Langerman and Hlompho Kekana in the second stanza.

Sundowns responded by scoring a goal in the 60th minute courtesy of Meza. They were handed a penalty in injury time of the second which Sirino converted.

Chiefs could have scored another goal towards the end of the match but Chiefs’ 16-year-old youngster Sifama’s shot went slightly wide.

The score at the end of the 90 minutes read Chiefs 4-2 Sundowns.

Following his exploits on the day, Leonardo Castro was unanimously as the Man of the Match.
